My Philosophy:
Much of a student’s problems with math lie not in his or her inability to grasp mathematical
concepts, but in learning the
language of math.  "Mathematicians are lazy” is a phrase often heard
in the scientific community. All of the notations and symbols and theorems with “foreign” words
are basically “shortcuts” since a mathematician hates to spend time and energy writing their
process out in actual words.  I encourage my students to learn math as the language that it truly
is, and to understand how to communicate the subject matter in both "plain English" and
mathematical notation.

Personally, I adore math, and my enthusiasm does “rub off” on many of my students!  And,
tutoring allows me to keep my mind sharp for my various research and consulting projects, while
performing a much needed service!

I tell many of my clients, "I am a mathematician, not a magician!"  In order to make progress, a
student and parent must commit time and effort towards the goal.  This includes making a
commitment to break old ineffective habits and replace with them with new ones, and showing up
consistently to tutoring sessions. Results depend on mutual commitment and collaboration.

A great tutor is best defined as a coach who knows how to bring out the true potential of a
student.  That is my goal.

Learning Centers, Online Tutoring, Software, or Private Tutoring…Which is Best?
There are many different types of tutoring providers, ranging from after-school programs to
online services.

For basic math learners, I recommend the
KUMON or Mathnasium programs which emphasize
repetition and practice of basic math facts.  The only way to create a solid math foundation is to
get in there and build it.  Additionally, the costs for the programs are reasonable for the subject
matter covered.  For basic math training I also suggest hiring an experienced responsible student
from a local junior college tutoring center, they are often pre-screened and offer reasonable rates.

That being said, private tutoring is more appropriate for students with academic problems that are
focused in one or two areas, or who are tackling more advanced subjects.  These students
possess the basic skills of addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts, but are having trouble
with grasping concepts or problem solving.

Based on feedback I have received from parents who have tried both approaches, many students
do not need the 4-5 hours of tutoring required each week by most learning center contracts.
Usually, significant academic improvement can be seen with only 1-2 hours of tutoring each
week.  Additionally, if a student does not indicate
any improvement within the first month, I
would question the process.  A six-month contract in most cases should not be necessary for
improvement.

Finally, there are online tutoring services and tutoring software available.  However, I personally
don’t care for them.  Trying to type in a question or homework problem with mathematical
symbols is frustrating.  And, I’m sure many who read this have most likely already tried some of
the various software and computer programs designed to help a struggling student, without much
success.

As a general rule, students who currently hold a “D” or “F” in their subject will likely need 2 hours
of tutoring each week, while students who currently hold a “C” or higher can usually improve
with 1 hour each week.

What I offer:
I possess a mathematics (statistics) degree from the University of California, Riverside, and have
experience in tutoring students from middle school through graduate college level

I tutor all subjects in mathematics, statistics, and physics.  I may be able to help with other
subjects as well, (I write professionally for
The Californian newspaper and possess excellent
writing skills)  feel free to contact me for more information.

I tutor from my home on the Northeast side of Murrieta, easily accessible from the 15 and 215
freeways.  As a working researcher and consultant, working from my home allows me to work
between tutoring sessions.  I am currently shopping for office space and in the future I'll perform
the majority of my tutoring at my business address.
